Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of low intensity muscle strengthening on the neurotransmitters associated with depression and emotion regulation disorders in stroke patients with depression or emotion regulation disorder.

Methods : Ten chronic stroke survivors diagnosed with depression or emotion regulation disorder were included. Concentrations of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine were measured before and after intervention. Low intensity muscle strengthening was performed once a day for 50 minutes, 5 times a week for 10 weeks.

Result : After intervention, the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine were significantly improved after intervention (p <.05).

Conclusion : The results of this study confirm that low intensity muscle strengthening has a positive effect on the concentration of neurotransmitters in stroke patients with depression and emotion regulation disorders. In future studies, it is necessary to examine the changes of neurotransmitters in subjects with various exercise methods and exercise intensity with depression and emotion regulation disorder.
